BAJ Started the Distribution of Relief Supplies in Emergency Evacuation Camp in Yangon

Cyclone Nargis which hit Myanmar on the 2nd of May caused great deal of damage in the south delta areas including Yangon. Myanmar state channel reported on 6th May that more than 22,000 people died and 41,000 are missing, but the extent of damage is still not known.

BAJ Yangon office started distributing drinking water and candles in an evacuation camp in Yangon on 9th May. The distribution was carried out in an emergency evacuation camp in Yangon division.
The following supplies were distributed in the camp and people living around the camp.
Drinking water 2,528 bottles
Candles 3.200
Soaps 1,000

Water and electricity have been cut off in Yangon, and although they recovered in some part of the city, there is still a lack of safe drinking water and people are making a long line in front of water wells. The price of food has been raised after the hit of the cyclone and that of drinking water was doubled or even trebled which is seriously affecting the life of low-income households. There are not enough evacuation centers despite the fact that many of wooden houses have been destroyed, and people are suffering under unhygienic environment. In Myanmar, rain season will start from the end of May.
BAJ continues relief activities exploring the possibility of cooperation with UN, governmental agencies and local NGOs.
