2.1.1 Regional Development
Program, Northern Rakhine State
As a part of the Repatriation/Reintegration
Program, BAJ opened mechanical workshop aiming for transferring techniques
and creating job opportunities to returnees as well as local adolescents
in Maungdaw, NRS as an implementing partner of UNHCR. Since 1998, BAJ
also has been engaging in the basic infrastructure development and the
operation of rental shops. Then, BAJ extends its activities into income
generation programs for women who have finished BAJ’s sewing trainings
from 1999.
2.1.2 Mechanical Workshop/Technical
Training
BAJ's mechanical workshop provides repair & maintenance of vehicles,
machineries and engines filtration service of low-quality fuel for UN
agencies and INGOs operating in NRS. At the same time, technical training
course is occasionally organized for the local adolescents who have less
opportunities of learning technical skills. The course varies from mechanical
training course (automobile, motorbike and OBM repair & maintenance
courses) to construction training course (carpentry and masonry works,
furniture making course etc).
2.1.3 Community Social Development Project (CSDP)
Due to religious constraints, many Muslim women in this area are difficult
to enjoy going out or expressing their opinions. BAJ expands its Dress
Making Project started in 1999 beyond Community Social Development Program.
This project consists of training for women at village sites as well as
workshop for male community members to raise awareness and understanding
among men. In addition, income generation activities are held for the
women who have finished the training to assist their income increase.
Although the women in the area normally have little chance to mingle with
the women from different racial and religious background, it is quite
characteristic that all of these activities contribute Muslim women as
well as Rakhine women and other minority women to work together and create
harmony between people from different racial and religious backgrounds.

2.1.4 Life Improvement
Training Program (LITP)
BAJ operates the training courses at villages
in NRS since some women have difficulty coming to Maungdaw town far away
from their villages. Most of the instructors including Muslim, Rakhine,
Thet which is one of the minority groups inhabiting in the area, are the
graduates of the dress-making projects or the sewing trainings. Training
consists of life improvement training program such as sewing, literacy,
numeracy, basic health and sanitation, and information exchange. This
program also includes workshop for male community members, particularly
religious readers, schoolteachers, fathers and husbands of trainees.
2.1.5 Income Generation
(IG) Program
There is a tailoring training center within the compound of Maungdaw Technical
Center. The tailoring center is equipped with sewing machines, irons and
other necessary items, so that the women who wish to utilize their tailoring
skills and earn some income after finishing BAJ’s tailoring course. At
the moment, there are around 40 members of IG activities, although the
number varies from time to time. The members receive orders from INGO
staff operating in NRS, Yangon and Tokyo. Items are available at BAJ’s
offices, some hotels in Yangon and at seasonal events in Tokyo.
2.1.6 Vulnerable Group
Development Program (VGDP)
BAJ together with World Food Programme (WFP) has newly started the program
called "Vulnerable Group Development Program" in 2006. This
project narrows down its beneficiaries to the more vulnerable women who
face difficulties. For example, women who are the main household with
some small children tend to be selected as beneficiaries. The main purpose
of this program is to prevent the outbreak of infectious diseases such
as cholera during the rainy season. The component of the training is almost
same as LITP, though we put more emphasis on basic health and sanitation.
The last year saw less people infected with the disease partly due to
the training.
