Retrieval in BAJ

It is in Northern Rakhine State (NRS) located on Myanmar-Bangladesh border, that BAJ has started the first project in Myanmar in 1995. In 1991 and 1992, approximately 250,000 Muslims living in the area fled into Bangladesh due to various reasons. United Nationals High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) started Repatriation/Reintegration Program in the border areas in cooperation with both Myanmar and Bangladesh governments to settle the problem. As a part of the Repatriation/Reintegration Program, BAJ started mechanical workshop in NRS. Since then, BAJ has been engaging in regional development projects in vast areas of Myanmar.

In NRS, BAJ not only provides mechanical workshop/technical training, but also implements the basic infrastructure development programs as well as community social development program including income generation activities. These programs introduce on-the-job training (OJT) and transfer practical techniques and skills to local youths for more job opportunities by using locally available materials.

In the Central Dry Zone with only limited rainfall per year, BAJ has been implementing tube-well constructions, rehabilitation of old tube-wells, and organizes maintenance trainings and workshops for local communities to ease the water shortage problem.

Recently from 2004, cooperating with UNHCR, BAJ started "Project on Rehabilitation and Provision of Water Points" along Myanmar-Thailand border as a UNHCR's implementing partner.

Yangon Office

Field offices in Myanmar rely on BAJ Yangon office as a hub of coordination between the headquarters in Tokyo as well as such donors as UNHCR and the Embassy of Japan in Myanmar. BAJ Yangon also functions as the key office in terms of logistics and financial management for all the projects and offices in Myanmar.
